Subject: S/MIME for dummies... how do I decrypt smime.p7m?
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Notes Client
Technical Area: Security
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.3
Reproducible: -Reproducibility-

Clients running 8.5.3FP3
Server running 8.5.3FP4

In one of our mail-in databases we are receiving a mail containing an attached PDF file. However in the mail-in database this is shown as an "smime.p7m" file.
When opening the mail a "Cross certify" dialogue is shown, which we accept.
The body of the mail is perfectly readable, but the attached file is not.

Being absolutely no expert on S/MIME mails I'm hoping someone can clarify for me:

1) Does S/MIME require the reader of the mail to have the senders public key?
2) Does S/MIME even work on a mail-in database with no one particular recipient/reader/owner?
3) Why is the body of the mail readable but not the attached file?

I've tried p7mviewer from Cryptigo (on several 32 and 64 bit machines) but it crashes when opening the smime.p7m file.

Any help appreciated :)
